General elections to the Althingi 25 April 2009

General elections to the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, were held on 25 April 2009 under the general elections Act from May 2000. There are now six constituencies of which two are in Reykjavík. The total number of voters on the electoral roll was 227,843 or 71.4% of the total population. Participation of voters in the general elections was 193,975 or 85.1% of the total number of voters on the electoral roll.

Participation of female voters was slightly higher than that of male voters or 85.8% women compared with 84.5% men. A total of seven political organisations offered candidate lists in the elections in all the constituencies. Of the 882 candidates, there were 517 men (58.6%) compared with 365 women (41.4%). In the 1st to 3rd place on the lists the proportion of women was 38.1%. The proportion of elected female members was 42.9%, the highest so far.

A total of 63 members were elected to Althingi in the general elections on 25 April 2009, 36 men and 27 women, seven more women than in the elections in 2007. Other results of the general elections were as follows: the Progressive Party received 14.8% of votes and 9 elected members to the Althingi, the Inde-pendence Party 23.7% of votes and 16 elected members, The Civic Movement 7.2% and four elected members, the Social Democratic Alliance 29.8% and 20 elected members, the Left-Green Movement 21.7% and 14 elected members, The Liberal Party received 2.2% of valid votes and The Democratic Movement 0.6% but no elected members.
