On 1 January 2013 the resident population in Iceland was 321,857. The population growth was 0.7% or 2,282 persons. The population has grown in the past ten years by an annual average growth rate of 1.1%.

The number of births in 2012 was 4,533, 2,317 males and 2,216 females. The number of deaths was 1,952, 951 males and 1,001 females. The life expectancy of males at birth is estimated at 80.8 years, whereas the life expectancy of females at birth is estimated at 83.9.
