The population of Iceland at the end of the 4th quarter 2012 was 321,890, 161,440 males and 160,450 females. The population increased by 1,230 from the previous quarter. Foreign citizens were 21,470 by the end of the 4th quarter 2012. Inhabitants of the capital region were 205,740.
 
A total of 1,110 children were born in the 4th quarter and 490 persons died. Net migration was 630 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 5, and 620 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
 
Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 260 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 650 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 430 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 340 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (120).
 
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 490 out of 660, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 360 out of 970. The United States came second with 70 immigrants.
