The population increased by 500 in the 1st quarter
The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2012 was 320,060, 160,610 males and 159,450 females. The population increased by 500 from the previous quarter. Foreign citizens were 20,950 by the end of the 1st quarter 2012. Inhabitants of the capital region were 203,970.
A total of 1,060 children were born in the 1st quarter and 560 persons died. Net migration was 10 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was -130, and 140 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 270 persons emigrating in the 1st quarter. A total of 540 Icelandic citizens emigrated to Denmark, Norway or Sweden, out of 770. Of the 450 foreign citizens who emigrated, the largest group (150 persons) went to Poland.
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 490 out of 640, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 180 out of 600. The United States came second with 35 immigrants.
