According to the Labour Force Survey 86.4% employees, or 134,200 persons, were part of a trade union in 2014. Around 8% of employees were not members of a trade union and 5.6% did not know whether they belonged to a union.
Increased participation by age
In the year 2014, 89.2% in the age group 25-54 were members of a trade union and 90.3% of 55-74 years old. Participation is much lower in the youngest group, 16-24 years, where 72% were part of a trade union, 10% said they did not belong to a union and 18% did not know.
Women rather than men
Participation in trade unions is proportionally greater among women than men, 90.9% of women compared to 81.7% of men.
