In May 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 216,500 which is an 20% increase compared with May 2014.

Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 85% of the total number of overnight stays in May and increased by 28% compared with May 2014. Overnight stays of Icelanders decreased by 12% compared to May 2014.

In the capital region, the number of overnight stays was 138,800, which is a 5% increase compared with May 2014. Overnight stays in the South region were 31,200 in May 2015. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in May were residents from the USA (39,500), Germany (31,900), and the UK (13,700).

In the last twelve months, from June 2014 until May 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,463,500 which is an increase of around 14% compared with the same period in the previous year.

Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in May 2015 was 63,5%
In May the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the Capital region, around 77% and in the Southwest, around 71%.

The data above only show overnight stays in hotels that are operating for the whole year. Guesthouses and summer hotels are not included in this category.
