In January 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 161,400 which is a 35% increase compared with January 2014.
Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 87% of the total number of overnight stays in January and increased by 41% compared with January 2014. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 3%.
In the capital region, the number of overnight stays was 127,500, which is a 31% increase compared with January 2014. Overnight stays in the South region were 15,900 in January 2015. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in January were residents from UK (59,700), USA residents (25,500), and Germans (7,700).
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in January 2015 was 59%
In January the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the capital region, around 83% and in the Southwest, around 44%.
The data above only show overnight stays in hotels that are operating for the whole year. Guesthouses and summer hotels are not included in this category.
