0.4 Purpose and history
There is a growing demand for statistics on the ICT sector (information communication technology) and the information society. In 2002 Statistics Iceland took over a project from the Prime Minister's Office on data collection on the use of ICT within the Icelandic society. The aim of the data collection is to monitor the number of enterprises, the number of employees and turnover within the ICT sector as well as foreign trade with ICT products.
0.5 Users and application
Results from the data collection are of use for everyone, who is interested in the development of the information society in Iceland. That includes the government, municipalities, international organisations and the public in general. 0.6 Sources
Results on the number of enterprises and turnover are based on information from the VAT register of the Tax authorities. To be regarded as an active enterprise within the ICT sector, only enterprises with at least 5 million ISK turnover on a yearly basis in year 2000 are included in the number of enterprises. Turnover for other years is calculated according to the consumer price index (CPI).Results on the number of employees are based on information from the PAYE register of the Tax authorities.
Information on foreign trade with ICT goods are based on information from The Directorate of Customs and The Central Bank of Iceland.

1.2 Statistical concepts
Companies have registered an activity code according to the Icelandic Standard Industrial Classification (ISAT 95). The ISAT 95 has 17 main groups with five hierarchical levels of classification. The first four levels are identical with NACE 1 rev., the statistical classification of economic activities in the European Union. The ICT sector includes both production and service sectors. ICT production includes eight activity sectors and ICT service includes eleven activity sectors. Sub classes of ICT services are:
- Wholesale
- Telecommunication
- Consultancy services
The classification of the ICT sector is according to definitions used by other Nordic countries, the European Union and the OECD until year 2003, when a slightly revised version of the statistical classification of economic activities in the European Union (NACE rev.1.1.) was introduced. Those revisions were not introduced in ÍSAT 95.
According to ÍSAT 95, the activity sectors within ICT are:
