0.4 Purpose and history
There is a growing demand for statistics on the use of ICT (information communication technology) and the information society. In 2002 Statistics Iceland took over a project from the Prime Minister's Office on data collection on the use of ICT within the Icelandic society. The aim of the compilation is to give an overview on the evolution of the European information society.
For several years, the statistical institutes within the EEA have conducted surveys on the use of ICT within households and among individuals and enterprises. In 2004 a regulation concerning Community statistics on the information society was set by the European parliament and the Council.
Statistics Iceland has conducted surveys on the use of ICT in Iceland since 2002.
