Statistics Iceland has now released a new issue of Statistical Series, containing information on the number of full members of associations of media people, graphic designers, and artists with five years intervals from 1980 to 2005 divided by gender. In recent years the number of members has increased significantly in most of the associations. Members within the two associations of media people numbered 669 people at year’s end 2005, signifying more than a twofold increase since the mid-1980s. At end-of-year 2005 there was one woman member against every two men in the journalistic profession. The number of members of two associations of graphic designers totalled 342 in 2005, divided almost equally between the sexes.
Information is here presented on the 15 associations of artists and architects. Largest of these associations, the Icelandic Musician’s Union had 666 members at end-of-year 2005. The Scenographers’ and Costume Designers’ Guild is the smallest of the associations with 27 members. There is a significant disparity between the sexes in the membership of most of the associations of artists. Men were in majority of 11 of 15 associations in total, while women were the majority of members of only four.
