In the year 2010, the estimated number of visitors to museums totalled 1.6 million. The number of museums visitors has almost doubled since the mid-1990s, when the number of visitors was 829 thousand. Attendance to museums is greatest in the Capital region, some 950 thousand visitors in the last year, which equals 59 per cent of the total. Attendance to museums in other regions is significantly lower.
In the last year, historical museums (municipal museums excluded) attracted the greatest number of visitors, or over 500 thousands. Attendance to art museums was a little less lower, or 457 thousands. The number of visits to museums of other kind was significantly lower.
The figures include museums and special branches of museums, science centres and permanent exhibitions open for public display, which were able to provide the number of visitors.
