NEWS RELEASE EDUCATION 25 APRIL 2007

Staff members increased by 277 and full-time equivalents by 266
In December 2006 there were 5,012 staff members working 4,201 full-time equivalent jobs in Icelandic pre-primary schools. Never before have more people worked in pre-primary schools in Iceland. The previous year there were 4,735 staff members working 3,935 full-time equivalent jobs, resulting in an increase by 277 since 2005. The proportional increase is 5.9% which is considerably more than between the previous two years, when the increase was 0.7%. It should be noted that the number of children attending pre-primary school also increased, or by 2.1%. The number of females among staff members increased by 266 while the number of males increased by 11.

The number of full-time equivalent jobs has increased by 266 since December 2005, a 6.8% increase. The increase in full-time equivalent jobs is greater than the increase in number of staff, indicating that staff members have increased their workload. In December 1998 41.5% of staff members in pre-primary schools had one full-time job or more, while in 2006 50.1% of all employees had at least one full-time job.

An increase among the oldest staff members
The largest age group among staff members in pre-primary schools is 30-39 years old, as in 2005. From 1998 to 2004 the age group 20-29 was the largest among staff members in pre-primary schools. A total of 198 staff members were younger than 20 years old in December 2006 while they were 168 in the previous year. The number of staff members who are 60 years old or older are 269 or 5.4% of all staff. Never before have there been more staff members in this age group. The proportion of staff members in this age group has increased year by year since 2002.

More educated pre-primary teachers teaching than ever before
The number of educated pre-primary school teachers has increased in the last years. The proportion of staff members working in education and child care that are educated as pre-primary school teachers is larger than ever before since Statistics Iceland started its data collection in 1998. In 2006 they were 33.5% of staff members working in education and child care. In addition 0.7% of staff members have completed a diploma in pre-primary school education and 5.9% have completed other pedagogical education. Thus, a total of 40.2% of staff in education and child care have completed some pedagogical education, the largest proportion measured by Statistics Iceland.

A decrease in staff turnover
The turnover among personnel between the years 2005 and 2006 was 24.1%; a decrease from the previous year when the staff turnover was 25.8%. The turnover rate is greatest among unskilled personnel. A total of 761 unskilled staff members working in education and child care in 2005 had left their jobs in 2006. The turnover rate is highest among cleaning personnel, 41.2%, which is considerably lower than the year before, when it was 50.9%. The turnover is lowest among assistant headmasters and headmasters.

It should be noted that the turnover rate refers to two individual measurements. Therefore personnel who started working in 2006 and left their jobs in the first 11 months of the year are not included in the data.
