STATISTICS EDUCATION 17 SEPTEMBER 2026

The number of pupis in copulsory schools in Iceland was 46,725 in the autumn of 2025 and had decreased by 437 from previous year, or by 0.9%. Of all pupils, about 8.6% were immigrants. These data come from the annual data collection on compulsory schools in October each year.

A total of 177 compulsory schools were operating in Iceland in the 2025-2026 school year and increased by three schools from the previous year. There were 13 private compulsory schools operating with 1,500 pupils and three special puplic schools with 191 pupils.
