Almost 40,500 students are registered
In the autumn term 2004 there were 40,497 students registered in schools at the upper secondary and tertiary level of education, more than ever before. There were 24,220 registered students at the upper secondary level and 16,277 at the tertiary level. The number of registered students at the tertiary level has increased by 92.0% while the number of students at the upper secondary level has increased by 19.8% since 1997. Women outnumber men; they are 23,218 (57.3%) while there are 17,279 (42.7%) men registered. Distance learning as a mode of study is increasing in popularity and the number of students who favour this type of learning is now higher than in evening courses. In autumn 2004 over 80% of students are registered in day courses, over 12% in distance learning and over 7% study in evening courses.
