Statistics Iceland publishes the Icelandic classification of education ÍSNÁM2008. ÍSNÁM2008 depicts the classification of education in Iceland according to the international classification of education ISCED97. The handbook covers the definitions of levels and fields of study. In addition, the classification of education in Iceland above compulsory level in the traditional school system is shown for the years 1997 to 2007 according to ÍSNÁM2008. Work is ongoing on the classification of older programmes of study. The results will be published on the Statistics Iceland website when the work has been completed.
The department of education and culture at Statistics Iceland has consulted the Ministry of Education while adopting ÍSNÁM2008. Statistics Iceland has also consulted the international organisations that Iceland mainly cooperates with, i.e. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), The Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) and The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Data on the Icelandic school system according to ÍSNÁM2008 can be found on the Statistics Iceland website, e.g. data on enrolment by levels and fields of study.
The handbook on the ÍSNÁM2008 classification can be downloaded for free from the Statistics Iceland website. The handbook and classification are only available in Icelandic.
