According to the Constitution of Iceland the President of Iceland shall be elected by a direct vote for a period of four years, commencing 1 August of the election year. Six persons have held the office of the President of Iceland since the Establishment of the Republic 17 June 1944 until 1 August 2024.
A presidential election was held in Iceland 1 June 2024. The total number of voters on the electoral roll was 266.778 or 69.1% of the total population. Turnout was 215.635 or 80.8%. Turnout of male voters was 78.3%, female voters 83.3% and non-binary/other 67.1%. The results of the presidential election were that Halla Tómasdóttir received the most votes, 73,184 or 34.1% of valid votes. She was therefore elected President of Iceland for the period from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2028.
