In 2023, the registration of private limited companies increased by 1.4% from the previous year, with a total of 3,074 new registrations of private limited companies during the year.
Thereof, 580 new registrations were in Construction, which was a 3% increase from the previous year. There was a 21% increase in new registrations in Administrative and support service activities, which were up to 238 from 197. Additionally, there was an increase from 68 to 106 in Manufacturing (56%), and from 313 to 343 in Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles (10%). There was a 23% decrease in new registrations between years in Professional, scientific and technical activities, from 324 to 249.
Looking at the distribution of new registrations between regions in 2023, there was an increase in new registrations in the Capital region from 2,204 in 2022 to 2,269 in 2023, or by 2.9%. For other regions combined, registrations were 3.6% fewer than in the previous year, or 807 compared with 837.
New registrations of private limited companies were 211 in December 2023, or 5 more than in December of the previous year. The greatest number of new registrations in December was in Financial and insurance activities, or 40. Compared with December 2022, there was an increase from 21 to 30 in Real estate activities, and a decrease from 8 to 3 in Agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Statistics Iceland will henceforth publish figures on the number of new registrations on a quarterly basis. New registrations in January, February and March should be published in April 2024.
