NEWS RELEASE ENTERPRISES 20 AUGUST 2020

VAT-turnover in March-April 2020 decreased in most sectors. In this period, the Covid-19 pandemic started to affect the economy. The highest decrease was in “travel agencies, tour operator reservation service and related activities” (-76.6%), “Food and beverage service activities” (-54.4%), “Car rentals” (-41.0%), and “Wholesale of fuels” (-33.0%).

Increased turnover in some sectors
VAT-turnover increased in some sectors, e.g. “Information and communication” (+12.5%), “Retail trade” (+4.7%), “Wholesale excluding fish and fuels”, and “Electricity, gas; water supply; sewerage and waste management”. Some of these sectors are dependent upon exchange rates, as the value of the Icelandic krona dropped by 11% from March-April 2019 to March-April 2020. The increased turnover in information and communication is due to increased turnover in the subcategories “Motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities” (+89%) and “Computer programming, consultancy and related activities” (+18%).
