In 2010, export of services was 300,123 million ISK and the import of services 266,061 million ISK. Therefore, the services trade surplus for the year 2010 was 34,062 million ISK, The services trade surplus was 36,040 million ISK in 2009 at current exchange rates.
Transportation was the largest category of exports as the year before, accounting for 145,190 million ISK or 48.4% of total exports of services. Largest category within transportation was air transport, 43.4% of total exports of services. So-called other services were the second largest category of total exports, 29%, including all other services than transportation and travel. Largest category within other services was revenues resulting from other business services such as merchanting and other trade related services. Within other services, royalties and license fees also contributed to large extend. Sales of travel contributed 22.7% of total revenues of exports of services in 2010.
In 2010, the largest category of imports was other services, 119,607 million ISK or 45% of total imports of services. The largest category were expenses due to other business services including operational leasing services and miscellaneous business, professional and technical services such as legal services, accounting services, management consulting and public relations. The import of transportation was 28.9% of total imports of services and travel expenses were 26.1%.
There was a surplus of 68,228 million ISK of transportation but there was a 32,659 million ISK deficit on other services and 1,507 million ISK deficit on travel services in 2010.

EU was the largest trading partner in 2010, both with regards to exports and imports of services. 57.3% of total exports of services were sold to EU and 63.0% of total imports of services were bought from EU. There was a trade surplus with EU, 4.459 million ISK. The three largest trading countries in exports and imports of services were Denmark, United Kingdom and USA. The largest partners in exports were Denmark, buying 11.3% of exported services, USA buying 10.7% and United Kingdom 9.1%. Iceland bought most of services from USA, 19.7% of imported services, United Kingdom 19.6% and Denmark 17.2% of total. Even though Denmark was the largest of all countries with regards to exported services, there was a trade deficit with Denmark of 12,065 million ISK and there was also a trade deficit with USA, the largest importing country, of 20,395 million ISK in the year 2010.
