NEWS RELEASE EXTERNAL TRADE 22 APRIL 2009

Statistics Iceland publishes now an issue in the Statistical Series on External Trade for the year 2008. Goods exported from Iceland amounted to 466,900 million ISK and goods imported into Iceland amounted to 473,500 million ISK fob, 514,700 million ISK cif. Thus there was a trade deficit of 6,700 million ISK. Exports increased by 53.0% at current prices while imports increased by 19.9%. Marine products constituted 36.7% of all exports and manufacturing products 52.1%, but the largest import categories were industrial supplies, capital goods and consumer goods other than food and beverages. Largest trading countries were the Netherlands in exports and Norway in imports and EEA was the most important market area for both exports and imports.

Statistics Iceland now also releases on its website detailed tables of final figures for 2008. Figures for 2007 have been corrected and also published on the web. It should be noted that SITC classification underwent a fourth revision and timeseries of the SITC classification on the web are published according to SITC, revision 4, back to 1999.
