In the summer of 2022, the value of landed catch from coastal fisheries was 4.7 billion ISK, there of 1.3 billion ISK in May, 1.9 billion ISK in June and 1.5 billion in July. The coastal fisheries period ended in July this year. In 2021 the value of coastal fisheries catch was 3.9 billion ISK, 838 million less than this year.
In 2009, coastal fisheries were initiated in Iceland as a specific quota class for small vessels and the coastal fisheries time period decided from May to August yeach hear. In 2022 there were 712 boats in the coastal fisheries quota class and the catch was 12,6 thousand tonnes. In 2009 some 554 boats were registered for coastal fisheries and the landed catch was 4,129 tonnes.
The coastal fisheries quota is divided into four coastal areas; Area A, Area B, Area C and Area D (see map) which is according to Act 116/2006. Cod catch amounts to 93% of the value of coastal fisheries and saithe amounts to 6% of the value. 58% of the cod was landed in Area A while 50% of the saithe was landed in Area D.
