NEWS RELEASE FISHERIES 15 NOVEMBER 2016

The total catch of Icelandic vessels in September 2016 was over 81 thousand tonnes which is a 13% increase from October 2015. Demersal catch was just over 40 thousand  tonnes, a decrease of 2% compared with October 2015. Cod catch increased but other species decreased. Pelagic catch was nearly 39 thousand tonnes which is an increase of 40% compared with October 2015. Herring was the main specimen in pelagic catch, 32 thousand tonnes in October, compared with almost 23 thousand tonnes in October 2015.

In the 12 month period from November 2015 to October 2016 the total catch has decreased by 232 thousand tonnes, or 18% compared with the same period a year earlier. The decrease is mostly due to less capelin catch. The value index in October is 2.9% lower than in October 2015.
