NEWS RELEASE FISHERIES 14 OCTOBER 2016

The total catch of Icelandic vessels in September 2016 was nearly 113 thousand tonnes which is a 22% increase from September 2015. Demersal catch was 35,700 tonnes, a decrease of 2%. Cod catch was 22 thousand tonnes and decreased by 2% compared with September 2015. Pelagic catch was 74 thousand tonnes which is an increase of 38% compared with September 2015. The increase in pelagic catch is due to a 61% more mackerel catch which was 53 thousand tonnes in September and the herring catch which was nearly 20 thousand tonnes.

In the 12 month period from October 2015 to September 2016 the total catch has decreased by 266 thousand tonnes, compared with the same period a year earlier. The decrease is mostly due to less capelin catch. The value index in September is 20.3% lower than in September 2015.
