The total catch of Icelandic vessels in 2023 was 1,375 thousand tonn which was valued as 197 billion ISK at first sale. In tonnes the catch decreased by 3% while the first sale value increased by 1% compared with 2022. The value of demersal catch was 126 billion ISK of which cod was the most valuable at 81 billion ISK. The value of pelagic species was 52 billion ISK divided between capelin, blue whiting, herring and mackerel.
In 2023, about 85% of the catch was sold directly from vessel to fish factory of the same owner. The value of this domestic processing was 132 billion ISK, while the value of catch frozen at sea was 38 billion ISK and the value of catch going to auction markets was 31 billion ISK.
