The value of catch by Icelandic vessels in May was nearly 10.7 billion ISK which is 11.3% less than in May 2016. However, the tonnage of catch in May was 27% more than in May 2016, or nearly 138 thousand tonnes.
Value of demersal catch was just over 8 billion ISK which is a 4.7% decrease compared with May 2016. Value of cod vas nearly 5 billion ISK, a decrease of 0.9% even though the tonnage increased by 19.9%. Value of other species decreased as well. Value of flatfish catch decreased by 23.4% and value of pelagic catch decreased by 24.8%.
Total value of catch in the 12 month period from June 2016 to May 2017 was 114 billion ISK, which amounts to 19.7% reduction in total value compared with the same period a year earlier.
