Statistics Iceland will publish population statistics based on improved methodology in March 2024 with the reference point of 1 January 2024. The publication will include reviewed time series back to the year 2011. Until now, population statistics have been based on registration of legal residence in the national register, but the improved method involves a wider range of public records.
The reviewed methods are due to the overestimation of population size by 10 thousand people revealed in the 2021 census.
Due to the reviewed method in population estimation, statistics from the fourth quarter of 2023 will not be published in January as in previous years. Publication of figures for the fourth quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, including time series back to year 2011, is scheduled around the middle of 2024 and will be published periodically from that point onwards.
