In 2003 1,823 persons died in Iceland, 962 males and 861 females. The crude death rate was 6.2 per 1,000 population. Mean life expectancy for Icelandic women is 82.6 years, 78.8 years for men. Icelandic men can now expect to live longer than men in any other country of the world. In the case of women, life expectancy is higher in Japan (84.9), Spain (83.1), France (82.9), Italy (82.9) and Switzerland (82.8).
