In 2008, 914 individuals were granted Icelandic citizenship. The number of applications for Icelandic citizenship has increased continuously since 1999, with the exception of the year 2007 when the number decreased by 197 from the previous year. More females were granted Icelandic citizenship in 2008 than males, or 525 females compared with 389 males.
Most individuals who were granted Icelandic citizenship in the year 2008 had former citizenship from Poland, as in previous years (164). The second largest group had former citizenship from the Philippines, or 126 individuals. In 2008, 107 individuals had former citizenship from Serbia and 62 individuals from Thailand.
When looking at country of birth, Icelandic born individuals where the biggest group who were granted Icelandic citizenship in the year 2008 (140). The second largest group was born in Poland (134), 124 individuals were born in one of the successor states of former Yugoslavia, and 111 were born in the Philippines.
