For the first six months of 2008 the net international migration was 4,703 compared to 2,559 for the same period in 2007. This amounts to 1.5% of the whole population in Iceland. Of the seven regions only two had a negative net migration (East and Westfjords). Net gains where most pronounced in areas in the vicinity of the capital region.
As in previous years international migration of foreign citizens increased between half year intervals. Net migration went from 970 in January-June 2007 to 4,517 for the same period in 2008.
Despite a high international migration internal migration has declined compared to last year. For the first six months of 2008 internal migration was 23,208 compared to 25,812 for the same period in 2007.
