In 2010, 2,017 persons died in Iceland, 1,063 men and 954 women. The crude death rate was 6.3 per 1,000 inhabitants which was the same as in 2009.

Infant mortality rate in Iceland was 2.2 per 1,000 live births in 2010.

Life expectancy of males in 2010 was 79.7 years, but 83.7 years for females in 2010.

Infant mortality in Iceland was lower than in any other European country in 2009, 1.8 per 1,000 live births compared with 4.3 in the European Union. Slovenia came closest to Iceland with an infant mortality rate of 2.4. The infant mortality was between 2.5 and 3.1 in the other Nordic countries. In 2009 the infant mortality rate was highest for European countries in Turkey with 15.3 per 1,000 live births.

In 2010, mean life expectancy for Icelandic women was 83.7 years and 79.7 years for men. In 2009  mean life expectancy for Icelandic women was the fifth highest in Europe. The highest average life expectancy for women in Europe in 2009 was in France (84.3 years) and Spain (84.2 years). Mean life expectancy for Icelandic men was the highest in Europe in 2009 with Switzerland in second place with an average life span of 79.3 years.
