NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 04 JUNE 2024

Outgoing transfers from Iceland based on the Dublin cooperation were 47 in 2023. This is almost a threefold increase in the number of transfers compared with 2022, but the Covid-19 pandemic likely affected the numbers for 2020-2022. In the period of 2008-2023, the highest number of transfers was in 2017 when 117 individuals were sent from the country. In 2018 the number increased again, when 52 were transferred from Iceland.

Most of the outgoing transfers from Iceland based on the Dublin cooperation in 2023 were to Spain and Sweden.

Partner countries in 2023
In 2023, nine individuals were transferred to Spain and Sweden, five to France and Italy, four to Belgium, Germany and Poland, and two to Ireland.

Males vast majority of those transferred
Of those transferred to partnering countries due to the Dublin regulations, males were vast majority. In the years between 2015 and 2023 the annual proportion of men was between 77 to 93%.

About the data
The Dublin Regulation is a cooperation based on regulation from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union nr. 604/2013 from 26 June 2013 establishing the criteria and arrangements for determining which Member State is responsible for examining an application for international protection lodged in one of the Member States by a third-country national or a stateless person.

Figures on relocation from Iceland to partner countries as a result of the Dublin cooperation are compiled from data from the Directorate of Immigration. Children who are accompanied by guardians are not counted. From 2024 and onwards, figures for accompanied minors will be available due to improvements in registration. This change comes from collaboration between the Directorate of Immigration and Statistics Iceland, which aim to improve the quality and timeliness of the data on outgoing transfers.

Outgoing transfers refer to the transfer of international protection applicants to partner countries responsible for the applicants in question.
