NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 28 JULY 2016

The population of Iceland at the end of the 2nd quarter 2016 was 336,060. The number of males was 169,540 and females 166,520. The population increased by 1,760 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 215,380 and 120,680 outside the capital region.

A total of 950 children were born in the 2nd quarter and 550 persons died. Net migration was 1,490 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was positive by 150, and 1,330 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 160 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 560 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 320 moved to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 530 foreign citizens who emigrated moved to Poland (120).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 500 out of 720, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 740 out of 1,870. Lithuania came second with 180 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 28,880 by the end of the 2nd quarter 2016.
