The population of Iceland at the end of the 3rd quarter 2011 was 319,090, 160,130 males and 158,960 females. The population decreased by 90 from the previous quarter. Foreign citizens were 20,960 by the end of the 3rd Quarter 2011. Inhabitants of the capital region were 203,240.
A total of 1,220 children were born in the 3rd quarter and 470 persons died. Net migration was -850 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was -690, and -160 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 590 persons emigrating in the quarter. A total of 1,380 Icelandic citizens emigrated to Denmark, Norway or Sweden, out of 1,730. Of the 1,000 foreign citizens who emigrated, the largest group (360 persons) went to Poland.
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 790 out of 1,050, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 180 out of 840. Germany came second with 60 immigrants.
