The population of Iceland at the end of the 3rd quarter 2017 was 346,750. The number of males was 176,590 and females 170,160. The population increased by 2,790 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 221,480 and 125,270 lived outside the capital region.
A total of 1,100 children were born in the quarter and 530 persons died. Net migration was positive by 2,180 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was negative by 150, but positive by 2,330 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 460 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 1,320 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 970 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 1,350 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (340).
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 810 out of 1,170, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 1,310 out of 3,670. Lithuania came second with 350 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 36,690 by the end of the 3rd quarter 2017.
