The population of Iceland was 368,010 at the end of the third quarter of 2020, 188,790 males and 179,220 females. The population increased by 1,320 from the previous quarter or by 0.4%. Inhabitants of the capital region were 235,870 and 132,140 lived outside the capital region.
Positive net migration of foreign citizens
A total of 1,280 children were born in the third quarter and 520 persons died. Net migration was 550 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 150 and 410 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
The largest group of foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland
Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 420 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 960 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 730 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 2,040 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (650).
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 610 out of 1,110, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 630 out of 2,440. Lithuania came second with 190 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 51,120 (13.9%) by the end of the 3rd quarter 2020.
