The population of Iceland at the end of the 3rd quarter 2024 was 388,790, 199,340 males, 189,250 females and non-binary/other were 190. The population increased by 1,820 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the Capital region were 248,190 while 140,600 lived in others regions.
The method for estimating the population was revised in March 2024 and the time series have been updated from 2011 onwards.
A total of 1,130 children were born in the third quarter and 630 persons died. Net migration was 1,300 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was -140, and 1,430 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated. Foreign citizens were 67,330, or 17.3% of the total population in Iceland by the end of the third quarter 2024.
A new method for estimating the population in Iceland
Statistics Iceland publishes now for the first time population statistics calculated with a new method. Until now, population statistics have been based only on registration of legal residence in the national register. The new method is founded on a broader base of register data, tax data and data on students in addition to the national register.
