In August 2026, there were 15,900 unemployed individuals aged 16 to 74 according to seasonally adjusted results from the Icelandic Labour force survey. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.8%, the employment rate 73.7% and the activity rate 79%. Seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 0.2 percentage points between July and August, the employment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points and the activity rate increased by 0.3 percentage points.
According to the unadjusted measurements, unemployment was 6% in August 2026 while the number of unemployed individuals was around 14,100. The employment rate was 75.2%, corresponding to just under 221,300 people, and the activity rate was 79.9%, or about 235,300 individuals in the labour force. Compared with the same month in 2025, measured unemployment increased by 0.7 percentage points, the employment rate fell by 3.6 percentage points and the activity rate decreased by 3.3 percentage points.
