NEWS RELEASE LABOUR MARKET 04 MAY 2010

The number of persons in the labour force in 2009 was 180,900 of which 167,800 were employed and 13,100 unemployed. The activity rate was 80.9%, employment rate was 75.1% and unemployment rate was 7.2%. In the years 1991 to 2009 the activity rate was rather stable between 80.7% and 83.6%. Since 1991 the employment rate has never been lower and the unemployment rate higher than in 2009. Until 2009 the highest unemployment rate was in the years 1992 to 1995 or between 4.3% and 5.3%.


 

In the years 1991 to 2009 the activity rate and employment rate was highest amongst those with university degree and lowest amongst those with only primary education. Unemployment rate was lowest amongst those with university degree and highest amongst those with only primary education.

The average number of working hours of men decreased from 51.3 hours in 1991 to 43.8 hours in 2009 while the average number of working hours of women was rather stable around 35 hours. Proportion of women in full time work has increased since 1991 from 51.6% to 63.1% in 2009 while the proportion of men in full time work was around 90%.
