Register-based employment figures decreased every month of the year 2020 compared with the same month the previous year, the decrease being 4.8% between years. Employment figures totalled 186,669 for the first quarter of 2020 compared with 189,736 in 2019, corresponding to a decrease of 1.5%. The size of the workforce decreased by 5.2% in the second quarter compared with 2019, 5.3% in the third quarter and 7.0% in the fourth quarter.
From a regional perspective, the most significant decrease was in the Southwest region. In 2019, the average size of the workforce was 14,685, down to 13,195 in 2020 which is a decrease of 10.1%.
The current publication adds statistics for employment by education attainment level and economic sector. The education attainment level shows a steady increase in the proportion of employees with a university degree from 2008. The sector-based statistics show that while the percentage of employees working for governmental agencies and municipalities decreased between 2014 and 2018, it has grown since then.
