The open source, web-based learning system created by the University of Iceland has released a new version (https://beta.tutor-web.net) allowing real data sets to be used in exercises and tutorials. The standard version (http://tutor-web.net) is still actively used by students of high school and university for learning statistics while the new one can be already experimented with.

The open data sets are data of official statistics, from Statistics Iceland, Eurostat, Statistics Netherlands, Sweden and Finland and refer to population and housing, education, employment, living conditions, income distribution, health and labour conditions. Students may enter their own real data as well.

The exercises have a new structure as well: no longer restricted to multiple choices, no longer static content but dynamic and open to crowd-sourcing. Reviewing the educational material is also made possible for the users, who can also recommend new content.

The new features of the e-learning environment were developed by the University of Iceland in collaboration with Statistics Iceland, with funding from several grants including from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. A permanent link to the tutor-web-site is now active on Statistics Iceland's web.
