NEWS RELEASE PUBLIC FINANCE 22 DECEMBER 2006

Statistics Iceland releases now a new issue of Statistical Series.  This issue presents the main indicators on Government Finances in the 3rd quarter of 2006. In that quarter, the financial balance of general government amounted to 14.5 billion krónur in surplus or 1.3 per cent of GDP. This can be compared with a surplus of 1.5 per cent of GDP in the 3rd quarter of 2005. During the first nine months of this year, the general government financial balance was positive by 48.5 billion krónur or by 4.3 per cent of GDP. In corresponding period last year, the general government financial balance was 35.5 billion krónur or 3.5 per cent of GDP. This favourable result is mainly caused by a record high surplus in central government finances but the local government financial balance is still in deficit, or by 0.4 per cent of GDP the first nine months.
