NEWS RELEASE QUALITY OF LIFE 15 DECEMBER 2006

Statistics Iceland has released a new issue of the Statistical Series, containing results from the continuous household expenditure survey (HES) 2003-2005. The results are broken down by type of household, residence, quartiles of disposable income and quartiles of total expenditures. The results are compared with the results from the 2002-2004 household expenditure survey and the share of households food expenditures covered specifically.

The average household expenditure in 2003-2005 has increased by 7.0% from 2002–2004. The average household size continues to decrease, it contains 2.50 individuals compared with 2.58 for the years 2002–2004, so the expenditure per individual has increased by 10.2%.

The expenditures share of food and non alcoholic beverages continues to decrease, from 14.4% in 2002–2004 to 12.9% in 2003-2005. The expenditures share of housing, electricity and water has increased from 22.9% to 25.4%.

The average household disposable income is approximately 365 thousand kronur per month, nearly 146 thousand kronur per individual. Household disposable income is for most groups higher than their expenditures but the consumption expenditures amounts on the average to 94% of the disposable income.

The number of households participating in the survey was 1.773 and the response rate was nearly 50%.
