NEWS RELEASE QUALITY OF LIFE 09 DECEMBER 2011

Statistics Iceland has released a new issue of the Statistical Series, containing results from the continuous household expenditure survey 2008-2010. The results are broken down by type of household, residence, quartiles of disposable income and quartiles of total expenditures. The results are compared with the results from the 2007-2009 household expenditure survey. 

Average household expenditure is 442 thousand ISK a month or 183 thous. per individual. That is 3.1% lower than in the previous survey, 4.6% lower per individual. The CPI rose by 5.4% between 2009 and 2010, hence the real household expenditure declined by 8%. This is equivalent to 9.5% decrease per individual in real terms. 

The average household disposable income is 508 thousand ISK per month or 211 thousand ISK per individual. Household disposable income for most groups is higher than their expenditures but the average consumption expenditures amount to 87% of disposable income.

The sample was 3,475 households whereof 1,861 participated, giving a response rate of 53.6%.
