A special issue on household finances has been published. The aim is to shed light on the effects of household type and tenure status on the at risk-of-poverty rate, housing cost burden, and material deprivation. The results indicate that the number of adults seems to be a key factor when it comes to household finances, and that children mainly seem to have an impact when there is only one adult living in the household. Single-parent households and households with one single childless adult generally have the worst financial outcome.
Tenant status also seems to effect household finances, where financial difficulties seem to be more prevalent among tenant than among homeowners. Single-parent homes are the most likely to be in the rental market and childless one adult households are the second most likely to be in the rental market.
The at risk-of-poverty ratio has increased for single-parent households but decreased or not changed among other household types. In 2019, 37.5% of single parents were at risk of poverty, compared with 13.7% of households with one childless adult, 8.4% of households with two adults with children and 6.5% of households with two or more childless adults.
Housing cost overburden is most common in single-parent households, 36.3%, and followed by single-family homes, 23.4%. Out of households with two adults with children, 10.6% have a housing cost overburden and 6.5% of households with two or more childless adults.
Material deprivation decreased somewhat between 2016 and 2019 among single-parent households and households where one childless adult lived. In 2019, the material deprivation rate was 9.5% among single-parent households and 8.6% among households where one childless adult lived. In 2019 the material deprivation rate was 3.1% among households consisting of two adults with children and 3.2% among households consisting of two or more childless adults.
All figures for 2019 are preliminary.
