NEWS RELEASE SOCIAL AFFAIRS 08 NOVEMBER 2021

In December 2020 there were just over 51 thousand old-age pensioners which is an increase of 3.9% from the previous year. Of these, just over 24 thousand were men and almost 27 thousand women. About a quarter of old-age pensioners were younger than 70 and almost half were 75 years or older. A little less than two thousand old-age pensioners lived abroad, or almost 4% of the total. Since 2017, the number of old-age pensioners living abroad has increased by 45%.

Most pensioners receive payments from both the national basic pension and pension from occupational compulsory pension funds, as can be seen in the graph below.

The number of disability pensioners was approximately 20 thousand in December 2020, an increase of 0.3% between years, which is a lower relative increase than in previous years. Rehabilitation pensioners were over three thousand in December 2020, an increase of 25% between years. The main difference between the disability pension and rehabilitation pension is that a rehabilitation pension is a temporary provision.

Statistics Iceland publishes information on the number of pensioners in December each year from 2007 and 2020. This includes old-age, disability and rehabilitation pension as well as disability allowance by payers, that is the national basic pension and pension from occupational compulsory pension fund, without double counting.
