NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 10 MARCH 2022

In April 2020, Statistics Iceland started to publish exploratory statistics on overnight stays at hotels based on subset of hotels with consistently early returns. From now on this publication will be put into regular publication and will be updated within 10 days of the end of each month.

Based on first reports on overnight stays in February, the preliminary estimate of overnight stays in hotels were 295,100 (95% confidence interval 283,700-306,400), thereof 80,200 Icelandic and 214,800 foreign overnight stays.

In February 2021 there were 41,900 overnight stays and thereof about 88% by Icelanders. For further comparison there were 334,900 overnight stays at hotels in February 2020, thereof 297,500 by non-domestic tourists. Overnight stays in February 2022 were about 12% less than in February 2020.

Based on the same estimates, bed occupancy rates in February 2022 were approximately 47% (95% CI 45.2%-48.8%) compared with 10.1% in the same month last year and 50.8% in 2020.

The temporary estimate for overnight stays in January was 168,800 and the final number of overnight stays was 161,600. In the same temporary estimate the bed occupancy rates were 24.5%. The final occupancy rate in that month was 23.2%.

Bed supply at hotels are currently going through a period of change in supply, leading to a considerable increase in uncertainty in the initial estimates of overnight stays. These figures should therefore be taken with extra caution until the final number of overnight stays in hotels is published.
