In January 2016, overnight stays in hotels were 193,200 which is an increase of 20% compared with January 2015.
Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 87% of the total number of overnight stays in January and increased by 20% compared with January 2015. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 22%.
In the Capital region, the number of overnight stays was 156,100, which is a 22% increase compared with January 2015. Around 80% of all overnight stays were in th Capital region. Overnight stays in the South region were 16,900 in January 2015. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in January were residents from the UK (68,500), the USA (37,900), and Germany (12,500).
For the last twelve months from February 2015 to January 2016 overnight stays in hotels were 2,879,400 which is an increase of around 23% compared with the previous year.
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in January 2015 was 49%
In January the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the Capital region, around 68%.
