In July 2016, overnight stays in hotels were 441,500 which is an increase of 22% compared with July 2015. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 93% of the total number of overnight stays in July and increased by 23% compared with July 2015. At the same time, the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 17%.
In the capital region, the number of overnight stays was 240,400, which is a 25% increase compared with July 2015. Around 54% of all overnight stays were in the capital region, followed by overnight stays in the South region, which were 68,600. Overseas residents with the most overnight stays in Iceland in July were from the USA (102,400), Germany (82,000), and UK (41,800).
For the last twelve months, from August 2015 to July 2016, overnight stays in hotels were 3,303,500, which is an increase of around 28% compared with the previous year.
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in July 2016 was 93.0%
The occupancy rate for bedrooms was close to 90% or higher for all regions of Iceland in July.
