In June 2016, overnight stays in hotels were 357,400 which is an increase of 25% compared with June 2015. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 93% of the total number of overnight stays in June and increased by 27% compared with June 2015. At the same time, the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 3%.
In the capital region, the number of overnight stays was 206,400, which is a 29% increase compared with June 2015. Around 58% of all overnight stays were in the capital region, followed by overnight stays in the South region, which were 53,300. Overseas residents with the most overnight stays in Iceland in June were from the USA (90,700), Germany (62,100), and UK (36,800).
For the last twelve months, from July 2015 to June 2016, overnight stays in hotels were 3,222,300, which is an increase of around 28% compared with the previous year.
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in June 2016 was 82.6%
In June, the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the capital region, or 87.4%.
