In March 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 216,900 which is a 14% increase compared with March 2014.
Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 86% of the total number of overnight stays in March and increased by 19% compared with March 2014. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders decreased by 8% over the same period.
In the Capital region, the number of overnight stays was 156,700, which is an 8% increase compared with March 2014. Overnight stays in the South region were 31,000 in March 2015. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in March were residents from UK (70,600) USA residents (41,200), and Germans (17,500).
In the last twelve months, from April 2014 until March 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,409,700 which is an increase of around 14% compared with the same period in the previous year.
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in March 2015 was 65%
In March the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the Capital region, around 87% and in the Southwest, around 59%.
